Did you know that February is Smart Health Consumer Month? I just found out recently myself, and thought it would be a great idea to share some tips with you on how to be a smart health consumer. Taking an active role in your health and your healthcare means asking the right questions when looking for a chiropractor and knowing where to find the right resources for you. Here are some tips:

  1. Take Your Time Selecting a Healthcare Providers: Do your research, get recommendations from friends and family, and look to see what your health plan will cover. (Chiropractic can oftentimes be covered by your insurance!) Here are some questions to consider to help narrow down your choices:

    • Where is the office located?

    • What are the office hours?

    • What does the chiropractor specialize in? Working with children? Working with the elderly? Etc.

    • If the chiropractor is with other patients is there another staff member who will be able to answer your questions?

    • How long does an appointment usually take?
       

  2. Know what your health plan benefits are. As I mentioned above, Chiropractic care can oftentimes be covered by your insurance. Call your provider to see what your co-insurance, deductible, max out-of-pocket, and services are covered by your plan.

  3. Take an active approach in preventing health issues. Having a good doctor and receiving regular chiropractic care is part of being a smart health consumer, but it’s also important to make smart and healthy choices in your everyday life as well. Ask your chiropractor for stretches you can do at home between adjustments to keep your body in check.
     

  4. Be honest. You are paying your chiropractor for their expertise and you need to be honest with them. Give complete and accurate information about your health and your habits during your first visit at the office.
     

  5. Ask questions. If you don’t understand why something is happening or what you are being told to do ask. You need to have a complete understanding of what is going on with your health!
